The academic programme in the Faculty of Agriculture, University of Uyo known and addressed as Department of Forestry and Wildlife now wishes to be known and designed as the Department of Forestry and Natural Environmental Management.
The rationality behind this necessary change is explained as follows:Forestry and Wildlife Management in principles and practice involve ecological activities which form the core and therefore central to all other operations of environmental management.
The concept and practice of this nature’s fundamental profession not only provide socio-economic produces/products but applied in tackling nagging environmental menaces, viz. Remediating climate change Control of water and wind erosion Stabilization of sand dune Reversing of desertification Stabilizing watershed and hydrological systems Reclamation of wasteland from mineral exploitation Reclamation of marginal lands Reclamation of polluted lands, inter alia Maintenance of biodiversity. From the foregoing realities, it is therefore illogical even as it is irrational studying forestry in isolation with the general environmental management which forestry supports and forms the core.
In line with this important development, the Federal and even State Governments having realized the central role of Forestry in environmental management and in their wisdom have placed the Forestry sub-sector as a core directorate of the Ministry of Environment.
In a related situation, the Michael Okpara University of Agriculture, Umudike and some other Universities have created the academic Department of Forestry and Environmental Management.
The adoption of these naked realities will enable students and graduates of this discipline to be properly educated and trained in the principles and practice of Forestry and Environmental Management.
